3  stars,  Was working fine, but died suddenly without warning., December 26, 2006
By Thomas Hughes (Boston, MA USA)
This review is from: Fellows Powershred DS-1 Shredder (3011001) (Electronics)

I've had this shredder for 3 months and it has performed very well during that time up until I used for shredding a large volume of end-of-year papers that I no longer needed. The shredder simply stopped shredding. I had no hint that the end was near... The shredder green light comes on, the shredder motor still works in reverse mode, but does not accept paper from the top shred slot.

Other than that, a couple of things to consider before buying this model:
+ Looks great. The styling is great. It does not have the "heavy" industrial look of so many shredders.
+ Shreds credit cards easily. With all the credit card offers I get, this is a handy feature.
- For light shredding only. If you have a need for volume shred runs, I would look for a more capable machine (as I am right now).
- The basket needs to be properly seated or the shredder won't work. It's not obvious when the basket is not properly seated, so give it a jiggle if your shredder light isn't on.
! Be sure to unload the basket before it gets full near the top, or you'll be cleaning up confetti shred on the floor.
Summary: I liked the shredder quite a bit, but am disappointed that it has gone dark on me. I'll report back if I can get it to run again, or with the info of which shredder replaced this one.
Followup report:

I contacted Fellows and they are replacing my DS-1. They said it cannot run for more than 5 minutes without cooling down or the controller card will burn out due to overload.
I told them they need to do a better job of advising consumers that this 5 minute limit is critical. Their response is that this is covered in the manual. As far as I'm concerned, this is a machine that I would not "need" to read a manual on so it would be better if Fellows had some warning on the unit itself.
Followup summary:
Fellows customer service couldn't be better, they are coming through to replace the unit, not repair it, completely new unit being shipped to me.
But, given my shredding needs, I've ordered from Amazon the Fellows Powershred PS-77Cs. I'll follow up with a review after I've had a chance to use it a while (and give the DS-1 to my sister).
Good luck in your search for a product that suits you.

5  stars,  great shredder for the price, March 13, 2006

We bought this after watching a review on the local television channel. Every inexpensive cross shredder we've had (and we've had several) only lasted a few months. We shred a lot and need something that is fast, efficient, and reliable at a reasonable price. So far this seems to be it!
January 2010 update - Almost 4 years after we bought this, it still works, and we use it a lot. I sometimes do dumb things like try to shred too many sheets at once. This is the most forgiving shredder I've ever had, better even than the very expensive fancy one at work. Still looks brand new too.

5  stars,  Great Shredder - perfect for household use!, January 2, 2007

I had a lot of year end papers to go through and decided to purchase a confetti shredder to help prevent identity theft. I gathered up a bunch of papers to be shredded and tested out my new shredder. I love it. You have to remove the styrofoam wedged between the unit and the removeable can first, plug it in, test that the safety light works and then it's good to go. I was going through all my year end papers for about 4 hours, shredding large amounts of papers while I went - the shredder never gave out on me once. I counted out 11 pages and it shreds them easily, albeit a little slower than it would shred 1 piece. I'm not sure what the limit of it is, but it was chewing up big handfuls of paper, staples, credit cards, all with ease. Didn't jam up or have any problems. I like how simple and reliable it is to use. The next few days after that, my boyfriend has been using it a lot as he went through his year end papers without any problems either.

I do have 2 small complaints. Small, meaning - they don't bother me and would not deter me from buying this product again.
1. It's still messy - but that may just be the nature of the beast. It's a LOT less messy than the shredders where you have to lift off the motor to empty the paper bin (I MUCH prefer this style). When you're shredding, the bin holds everything nicely, but when you're emptying out the bin, expect to have to vacuum a little afterwards.
2. There was a little rubber pad that was glued onto the base - I'm assuming it was a nonskid rubber pad for the bin to rest on - well that promptly came unglued and I just tossed it. Still, it would have been nice if it was more securely fastened.

What I like about it:
1. It's a good price. I think it was the cheapest I would have to spend for a reliable unit that worked well, looked good, and held enough shredded paper that I didn't have to empty the bin every few minutes.
2. I like the pull out bin rather than have to wrestle lifting off the entire motor, dropping bits of paper all over the floor while I empty the bin. The pullout bin is very easy to empty out.
3. It's more attractive than other units.
4. Worked very well and I don't foresee it giving out any time soon. Very sturdy unit, yet small enough to tuck out of the way - like a regular trash can.
5. One large slot that everything goes into and it chewed up everything I threw out it. It's simple design works very well and is quite efficient.

I ordered some shredder lubricant to go with it.
I would highly recommend this item.

5  stars,  Exactly what I was looking for!, December 9, 2006

I made the mistake of puchasing a couple of the cheaper shredders in the past. I figured that I could get away with it since I don't shred that many items. After learning my lesson and having those ones break down on me, I finally looked into a better quality shredder with a little more strength and shredding capability. I purchased this shredder (the Fellows DS-1) and it is worth every penny!

My criteria were:
1. A shredder with a slide-out wastebasket.

I don't like having to pull off the (usually heavy) top portion of a shredder in order to empty it. I prefer the slide-out basket style of the DS-1. Due to the large basket and smaller shred cuts, the DS-1 step can has tons of capacity before you have empty it. I find that it is easier to use and empty without lining with a plastic bag, but it's up to you.

2. Ability to shred mail (i.e. tons credit card offers!) immediately without having to open it.

The DS-1 performs effortlessly, even at a continuous pace. It never seems to strain and is pleasantly quiet. Not silent of course, but much less noisy than previous shredders I've had. It also handles credit cards, small paper clips, and staples with ease. I also purchased some shredding lubricant oil for the cutters and use it as directed.

I'm extremely happy with this shredder and use it daily to shred items any personal information on it as well as all of the junk mail I receive daily. It handles the shredding effortlessly and I don't have to empty it out every time I use it. Plus, the unit looks really nice in the room! Not one of my initial criteria but it certainly helps!

Don't let "Fashion" get in the way of function! Per other's comments, the shredder is "dusty" particularly through the wire mesh basket.
In our case, the product received VERY light use for 13 months and died. The blades would run in reverse, but would not run forward to shred. Contacted Fellows Support to learn that the 5 year warranty "on the blades" did not cover our problem which fell under the 1 year "all other parts" warranty. Too bad....

The price of this shredder is very high for one year of use. Personally, after this experience I will steer clear of all Fellows products.

I've owned my DS-1 shredder for a couple of months and love it. It features a strong motor and shredder teeth. I like the basket attachment which makes disposal easy. I'm giving the product 4 stars,  because it recently stopped working; only works in reverse. Manufacturer is sending me a replacement right away so they get a 5 stars,  for customer service.

Have used (at work & home) several shredders over the years including others made by Fellows, with only one giving up after years of hard service. The DS-1 arrived a few weeks ago, very nice looking piece. However after using it one day to shred a few multi-sheet mailings (none over the recommended size), it made a horrible noise & hasn't worked since. No way to easily take it apart, but I'm guessing it stripped a gear since the motor runs but spins much faster now but nothing feeds through the shred gate and the cutter blades aren't turning. JUNK.

It seems to be working fine. I went through several cheap shredders first. Most of the cheap ones are worthless, and if they work at all they don't last long.

5  stars,  Just what I needed, September 1, 2006

Just what I needed for my home office. My first use was to clear out a decade's worth of old financial papers. Over a few days, I generated three large garbage bags of shreds for recycle, which is the heaviest duty I'll ever need from a shredder. The DS1 never missed a beat. It's strong enough for what I need to do, and looks good doing it.

Shredder worked just great right out of the box. Best part is you can use a plastic grocery type bag to line the waste basket part and avoid messy dumping of confetti shreds. Very happy so far.
